Interactions with Open Source Software: a pilot study on end users’ perception
نویسندگان
چکیده
Interest of scientific research on Open Source software and its development process is frequent. The number of articles available and the number of tracks or workshops on this topic in most relevant IS Conferences is high. The usability of Open Source Software has been scarcely considered until few years ago, probably due to the particular role that the user has in such a development environment. In Open Source software development users and developers are not so different. Anyhow, the diffusion of the Open Source software outside the development community contributes to sharpen the distinction among these two groups that are no longer equivalent. This circumstance has contributed to increase the interest on usability of Open Source software. Nevertheless, studies on end users in Open Source contexts are still young. This paper introduces a pilot study on the perception of the end user on Open Source software. The aim of this pilot study is to identify how the end user perceives the Open Source software (in terms of Usability, Functionality, Reliability, Efficiency and Quality in Use). 1 LUISS Guido Carli University, Via Pola n. 12, Rome, Italy, [email protected] 2 University La Tuscia, Via del Paradiso n. 47, Viterbo, Italy, [email protected] 3 LUISS Guido Carli University, Via Pola n. 12, Rome, Italy, [email protected]

متن کاملUsers' participation to the design process in an Open Source Software online community
The objective of this research is to analyse the ways members of open-source software communities participate in design. In particular we focus on how users of an Open Source (OS) programming language (Python) participate in adding new functionalities to the language. Indeed, in the OS communities, users are highly skilled in computer sciences; they do not correspond to the common representatio...
متن کاملFree/Libre Open Source Software users’ local Face-to-Face Meetings in career-related activities
While prior studies on Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) users have mainly looked at FLOSS users in the context of FLOSS communities, little is known about whether and how FLOSS communities play a role in the context of its users’ careers. This study takes an inductive approach to investigate the phenomena that are emergent and poorly understood. As promising themes emerge from a pilot st...
متن کاملTechnology-In-Practice and its Influence on User Involvement in OSS 2.0 Projects
There is evidence of a lack of non-developer user involvement and usability problems with free and open source software. Open source software (OSS) 2.0 communities where developers are not necessarily the users of the software often have greater commercial and non-profit institutional involvement in the project. As such these types of projects have a greater need to engage non-developer users a...
متن کاملAn Investigation of the Users' Perception of OSS Quality
The quality of Open Source Software (OSS) is generally much debated. Some state that it is generally higher than closed-source counterparts, while others are more skeptical. The authors have collected the opinions of the users concerning the quality of 44 OSS products in a systematic manner, so that it is now possible to present the actual opinions of real users about the quality of OSS product...
